You are going to have to wait until September 19th! Keeping checking back to see the clues of what our entire school will be reading this fall.
Today our One and Only Ivan study came to a completion. After all grades read Ivan, they completed a project based on a selected element of the novel. The results are terrific and range from art and writing, to studies about habitat, child heroes, Kindergarten Teachers led a directed draw of a gorilla and students used watercolor to finish it off. After having a discussion on the best home for Ivan, kindergarteners wrote their opinion and reasons why. First Grade First graders created the puzzle that Ivan used to communicate to Julia as his means of rescuing Ruby the elephant. Second Grade After extensive research on child heroes, second graders chose their own hero, after The One and Only Ivan's Julia, and created posters sharing their hero's attributes. Their faces took the place of the real hero. Third Grade Students wrote poetry about a character from Ivan and then illustrated their work. Fourth Grade, Fifth Grade, Sixth Grade Do We Have the Right? is a collaborative digital book created by students who read The One and Only Ivan. After researching endangered animals and examining critical moral issues regarding their research the students produced poems, haikus, and speeches about endangered animals and Ivan. See the link below to access the digital book. Seventh and Eighth Grades Students chose to recreate items that were Ivan's favorite things to draw- he was, after all, an artistic gorilla. After a lengthy study on realistic drawing this year, they continued that focus and drew beetles, crayons, pink milkshakes, yogurt raisins and french fries using oil pastels. Students were given clues all last week, and today the school book was finally revealed! THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN by Katherine Applegate, will be our first one school, one book, novel! This unique novel is the winner of the Newberry Medal and has been nominated for various other awards. Based on the real life of Ivan, a gorilla who lived for 27 years at a Mall in Tacoma, WA, The One and Only Ivan tells the tale of a Silverback Gorilla who befriends a small elephant and pledges to keep her safe.

HRPA is excited to introduce our first annual, One School, One Book! This is a program designed to create a shared reading experience every single student in our school. We’ve chosen a chapter book for the whole school to read. Each student will receive a copy of the book that will be their's to keep. The class will then decide on a project that each student will complete. On Thursday, March 10th, we will have a school-wide celebration where we share our projects with each other. We hope you are as excited as we are!
On Monday, we will reveal the super secret chapter book! The students have been given clues to everyday and have been trying to guess the book. Ask your students what their guesses are. We can’t wait to share One School, One Book with you! |
